Quick Primer

What is Ballroom Dancing?

Ballroom is a partnered dance that originated in England but has stylistic roots from all over the world. Ballroom dancing is actually comprised of ten different dance styles, separated into two major groups: Standard and Latin.

Standard dances are smooth and elegant  (such as Waltz, Tango, and Quickstep) and are always danced in a closed frame. Latin dances are much more rhythmic and have unique hip actions. Some Latin dances include the Cha Cha, Rumba, Samba, and Jive.

Find out more and watch some videos on the Standard and Latin dance pages!

Some Notes on our Club

  • All registered members of the University of Waterloo community are welcome
  • Lessons are on Sunday, and are taught by professional instructors
  • No partners required - we practice rotating partners during lessons and practices
    •  Under normal circumstances, we require that dancers rotate partners throughout the class in order to give everyone the opportunity to dance with different people. However, this is no longer mandatory due to Covid— dancers will be free to dance alone, with their own partner, with one person for the whole class, or rotate with others who would like to do the same.
  • No special shoes required - indoor shoes or socks are just fine
  • No experience required - we have different classes that progress from absolute beginner to advanced
  • Be sure to join the Facebook group, we post frequent updates and notifications there!
